April 2020

Dear Glendale Family,

Below you will find a list of assignments and activities that were sent home before Spring Break for students to work on during our time away from school.  Students were given information on how to log in online through their Clever accounts to access iReady, Reading Eggs or Study Island, and other academic-related websites. Students are very familiar with these online resources as they are part of our regular instructional processes.  Please continue to check in with your child’s teacher for updates. Teachers are meeting with classes through Class Dojo, Zoom, and Google Classroom. If you are unable to access the online platform being used and need paper packets, please contact your teacher or a member of the office staff listed below.  We miss you all!

Stay safe and healthy,

Principal Jennings

Hello,

During our time off I hope everyone stays healthy, safe and has fun! With the work packets sent home, here are some helpful tips on how to complete the work. Don’t forget Spring Break is March 23 - 27th. You are not expected to complete daily work during your break.

In Math, Lessons 23, 24, 25: Sessions 1 - 5 & Unit Review (pgs. 445 - 510) were sent home. 3 weeks' worth of work (1 session per day, 5 lessons per unit) Each unit starts with a family letter that is typically sent home as homework. Within each Unit/Lesson, math pages are labeled Session 1, Session 2... at the top of each page. Each school day one session is to be complete. Use the questions at the bottom of each page to support your child’s thinking and to help answer maths questions. There is 3 weeks' worth of work sent home. Not knowing the determined amount of days off you should have plenty of lessons to support your child’s learning.

In Reading, 6 KinderRoots books were sent home. Listed below. This is 6 weeks' worth of books. You may read ahead but to stay on track we focus on one book per week.

Day 1: Practice Green words (sound them out), Red words (sight word - say the word, spell the word, say the word; 3x)  Read the book to the child. Use parent/teacher questions at top of the book while reading for comprehension.

Day 2: Practice Green words (sound them out), Red words (sight word - say the word, spell the word, say the word; 3x) Read Practice sentences. Read the book. The teacher/parent read a sentence, students read each sentence 2x.

Day 3: Practice Green words (sound them out), Red words (sight word - say the word, spell the word, say the word; 3x) Read Practice sentences. Read the book. The teacher/parent read a sentence, students read each sentence 2x. Highlight Red words as you read.

Day 4: Practice Green words (sound them out), Red words (sight word - say the word, spell the word, say the word; 3x) Read Practice sentences. The student reads the book to a parent/teacher - retells events.

Day 5: Practice Green words (sound them out), Red words (sight word - say the word, spell the word, say the word; 3x) Read Practice sentences. The student reads the book to a parent/teacher - answers questions in the back of the book.

After the 5th day starts a new book. Encourage your child to continue reading the previous book for continued practice.

KinderRoots Books

  • The Fin in the Water (unit 13, wk 1)
  • Peg’s Duck (unit 13, wk 2)
  • Lost! (Unit 14, wk 1)
  • Hot Muffins (unit 14, week 2)
  • Big Bob’s Bad Day (unit 15, wk 1)
  • A Day at the Farm (unit 15, wk 2)

Writing

Writing prompts were sent home to support your child’s writing. Students can also start a journal to support their writing. A challenge is to use the Red words learned each week in a sentence or in a journal.

Miscellaneous:

Worksheet packets were sent home in literacy and math. We have a daily fluency practice to practice 3 letter words, vowel sounds, reading and math. Complete these at your own pace/one a day. Every student should also have a reading egg login to play reading games at readingeggs.com, a login to iReady math to complete tasks on their math path and play learning games. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email at kestey@vikingmail.org

Stay safe, healthy and happy. I will miss you all!

  1. You will now be logged into your student’s clever account. Your child will have access to websites such as: iReady, Study Island, Sumdog, Google classroom, and many others. Students will access these websites through the apps on the clever dashboard. Once you click the app, students will be automatically logged in.

We recommend students spend 15 minutes each night completing the learning games available in i-Ready or doing a lesson from their path.
