Students, teachers, and families came together this week for Evendale Elementary’s annual Walk-and-Roll-a-Thon, a fun-filled event promoting health, physical activity, and school spirit — all while raising money for important school programs.
Held on the school’s playground and surrounding paths, the event encouraged students to either walk or roll in any safe, people-powered way. From walkers to wheelchairs, every child had a chance to move, cheer, and be celebrated.
“Our goal is to promote healthy habits while creating an inclusive event where every student can participate,” said Principal Josh Murray. “Whether they walk, roll, or ride, everyone is moving together — and that’s what counts.”
A Community Effort
Parents, Evendale firefighters, and caregivers lined the area surrounding the school with posters, pom-poms, and lots of cheering. Some volunteers handed out water and healthy snacks, while others marked laps or helped guide students safely through the course. Students tracked their progress with jelly bracelets. Some students walked or rolled more than 20 laps, with proud smiles and tired feet at the finish line.
Raising Funds — and Awareness
The Walk-and-Roll-a-Thon also served as a fundraiser for the PTA. They sponsor field trips, Santa Shop, and classroom activities. Families and friends pledged donations based on the number of laps completed or gave flat donations to support the cause.
A Lasting Impact
More than just a one-day event, the Walk-and-Roll-a-Thon aims to inspire students to stay active throughout the year. Teachers reported that many students talked about walking or biking to school more often and were excited to spend time outside moving their bodies.
As students cooled down and collected their bracelets and popsicles, the message was clear: at Evendale Elementary, every step (and roll) counts.
