At Evendale Elementary School, the Susan Sargen Student Enterprise Program (StEP) has grown from 3 grades to the entire school because kids love the program, and teachers and administrators see the payoffs.
In early 2016, Evendale Elementary began partnering with the Alpaugh Family Economics Center to bring the Susan Sargen Student Enterprise Program (StEP) to its students, thanks to the initiative of second-grade teacher Rachel Schadel. What started with third, fourth, and fifth grades has since grown to include the entire school!
A Cincinnati native, Rachel is a proud graduate of Mount Notre Dame High School and the University of Cincinnati. She has spent her entire 21-year teaching career at Evendale Elementary in Princeton City Schools.
As we celebrate 10 years of StEP at Evendale, Rachel reflects on the program: “The StEP store provides students with meaningful, hands-on experience in financial literacy,” she shares. “They earn classroom money, budget, and make thoughtful spending decisions. I’m continually amazed by their engagement and the real-world understanding they gain.”
Evendale students also participate each year in Market Madness, a favorite part of StEP that turns classrooms into businesses, and students into entrepreneurs!
