Ms Stome and her 1st graders had a fantastic time celebrating the 120th day of school by dressing up as senior citizens! The hallways were filled with tiny “grandmas” and “grandpas” wearing gray hair, glasses, robes, and even carrying canes. Students laughed and showed off their creative costumes while celebrating how much they have learned over the past 120 days.

The Springdale 5th graders were thrilled to welcome back Mika from the Observatory for another exciting visit! Today’s lesson took them on an out-of-this-world adventure as they explored fascinating space rocks like meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites. Students were especially excited to get hands-on and create their very own comet models, learning how ice, dust, and gas come together to form these icy travelers of the solar system. Springdale 4th graders had an exciting hands-on learning experience as they explored the science of fingerprinting with Officer Riordan. Students were fascinated to discover that no two fingerprints are exactly alike and learned how law enforcement uses patterns like loops, whorls, and arches to help solve cases. With careful attention, they dusted for prints and examined their own unique patterns, feeling like real investigators for the day. Springdale students had a wonderful time enjoying a special performance of The Tortoise and the Hare presented by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. The lively actors brought the classic tale to life with colorful costumes, engaging music, and plenty of humor that kept students laughing and cheering. As they watched the tortoise’s steady determination and the hare’s overconfidence unfold on stage, students were reminded of the important lesson about perseverance and doing your best. During Black History Month, our Springdale 5th graders explored the powerful stories of trailblazing athletes who changed history through determination and excellence. Students learned about Vonetta Flowers, the first Black athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, and how her perseverance led her to make history on the world stage. They also studied Allyson Felix, one of the most decorated track and field athletes of all time, and discussed her advocacy for mothers and women in sports. In addition, 5th graders discovered how Jesse Owens courageously broke barriers and won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics. During Black History Month, our Springdale Little Vikes extend their learning beyond the classroom and into the special areas as well. In art class, students explore the vibrant styles and powerful stories of influential Black artists such as Faith Ringgold. They learn how art can tell stories about history, culture, and community, and create their own masterpieces inspired by these artists’ bold colors and meaningful themes. In music class, students discover the rich musical contributions of African American artists who have shaped many genres we enjoy today. They listen to and learn about Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, and more. Through singing, rhythm activities, and movement, students gain an appreciation for the powerful impact of Black musicians throughout history. In gym class, students recognize the achievements of outstanding athletes who have broken barriers and inspired generations. They learn about sports heroes such as "Spud" Webb and Misty Copeland discussing the timeline of fitness through perseverance, teamwork, and determination. Through games and physical activities, students celebrate not only athletic excellence but also the character traits that make these individuals true role models. #SPLittleVikes #AAGV #BlackHistoryMonth
