Bullying Prevention
What is bullying?
“A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself.”

Within the definition above we can see three main components of bullying behavior:
1. Involves an aggressive behavior
2. Typically involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time
3. Involves an imbalance of power or strength
Aggressive behaviors include things such as hitting, kicking and pushing as well as things such as teasing, saying mean things, spreading rumors, threatening, or purposefully excluding them from activities. This behavior occurs repeatedly and over time, not just one time like when a child was angry at their friend for the day. An imbalance of power or strength does not necessarily mean physical power or strength but could also mean social power.

What is the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program?
Princeton City School District is committed to addressing the problem of bullying. The district has launched a district wide initiative to decrease bullying and increase positive school climate in all of their schools. Every school in the district has been trained in and will be implementing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is an evidence-based violence prevention program that has been shown to decrease bullying and increase positive school climate when implemented as intended, that is with fidelity. The success of this program depends on the involvement and dedication of all school staff, teachers, associates, administrators, parents, and students.

The Anti-Bullying Rules
Each school will be adopting school rules against bullying. The rules will be posted in the school and teachers will talk about the rules with their students. Students are encouraged to talk with their parents about any bullying they experience at school.
Rule 1: We will not bully others.
Rule 2: We will try to help students who are bullied.
Rule 3: We will try to include students who are left out.
Rule 4: If we know somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
Bullying News
At least semi-annually, the Superintendent shall provide to the Board of Education a written summary of all reported incidents and post the summary on the District web site.
Allegations of criminal misconduct and suspected child abuse will be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency and/or to Child Protective Services in accordance with statute. District personnel shall cooperate with investigations by such agencies.
