The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) and Ohio early childhood program requirements involve several enrollment, screening, staffing, and classroom preparation processes that must be completed before a child can begin preschool. Families are encouraged to enroll at least 30 days before the start of school so the district has adequate time to:
• Verify residency and enrollment documents
• Review immunization and health records
• Complete developmental screenings and assessments, when required
• Determine eligibility for any special education or related services
• Develop individualized plans and supports for students who need them
• Finalize class rosters, staffing assignments, transportation, and classroom placement
• Ensure students receive a smooth and successful transition into preschoolEnrolling early helps the district meet state requirements, plan appropriately for student needs, and ensure that children are ready to begin learning on the first day of school. Families who wait until the last minute may experience delays in placement while required enrollment and screening processes are completed.
For children who may need preschool special education services, Ohio regulations require evaluations, eligibility determinations, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) planning before services can begin, making early enrollment especially important.
